Enjoy photos from the launch of A Journey: Loneliness, Hope & Resilience, our latest exhibition at Nottingham’s Institute of Mental Health, on the 23 May 2016.

The new exhibition showcases 40 works by artist from across the United Kingdom, each a unique attempt to capture the often-harrowing experience of mental ill health. Exhibitors range from people with personal experience of mental health issues to artists inspired by the theme, as well as mental health professionals.

The launch formed part of the Institute of Mental Health’s 10th anniversary celebrations. Gold medal winning Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington was in attendance to give a talk on the mindset of an Olympian and present prizes to three commended artists. Sarah Davis was highly commended for her hand-carved bars of soap ‘Being Healthy, Being Clean’, a playful and clever depiction of the journey to recovery from OCD, and her woodcut print ‘Hands Of (1)’. The runners up were Melanie Ward, for her stunning works ‘100 Things I Wanted To Say But Couldn’t’ and ‘200 Opportunities I Missed’, and Fernando Carvalho for his haunting painting ‘Is that you, my friend?’.

Professor Gary Winship spoke about the importance of arts at the Institute and the role they can play in recovery from mental health issues. Tim Challans, Chair of City Arts, explained the importance the organisation places on supporting the creative work of people with mental health issues.

A Journey: Loneliness, Hope & Resilience’ runs from 23 May to 23 September 2016. It is open for viewings on weekdays from 10am to 4pm. The Institute of Mental Health is on the University of Nottingham’s Jubilee Campus.
