‘Here and Now’ is the ninth exhibition staged by the Institute and City Arts, featuring a diverse selection of work which captures a range of different ways that unique moments affect our mental health. An open exhibition, it showcases work submitted by artists, individuals that have experienced mental health issues, carers, healthcare professionals and others with an interest in addressing mental health issues through their artwork.

At the launch event on Wednesday 17th May, Professor Martin Orrell from the Institute and City Arts Chair Tim Challans spoke about the importance of the collaboration between the two organisations, and the powerful ability of the exhibited artworks to illuminate each artist’s unique experience of the world. Artist & Curator Diana Ali officially opened the exhibition. Diana had work in our 2010 exhibition ‘Voices’ and recently appeared as a mentor on BBC One’s The Big Painting Challenge.

After an inspiring talk about her work, Diani awarded prizes to the creators of the three artworks selected through a vote held amongst Institute of Mental Health staff. Mark Carr was commended for his painting Suppression 1, Jayne Grant for her silk painting Polly Parrot, and Nicola Halford was highly commented for her glass painting Change.

Many thanks to: Kate Duncan, Joe Pick & Tim Challans from City Arts; Gary Winship, Elvira Perez Vallejos, Carole Appleby, Professor Martin Orrell from the Institute of Mental Health; and all the artists who submitted their incredible work for the exhibition.
