Fantastic photos from Refugee Week 2019 at City Arts, taken by our talented volunteer photographer Matt.

City Arts was open from 15th to 22nd June, showcasing amazing artwork as part of our ‘markmaking’ exhibition. It included: photos of Global Sistaz United captured by Sara Gaynor; poems and photos from young adult refugees, created for Inspire Art’s VOICES project; pages from THE BOOK OF OURS, created by Bulwell school children for their local arts week; extracts from ‘101 Beads Kurdistan in War’ a collection of photographs taken by Gaylan Nazhad; and sculptures by artists Josh Tan and Tammy Woodrow.

Following the exhibition opening, captured in these photos, during Refugee Week we hosted events at City Arts. On Monday 17th people learned to play Persian Daf rhythms at a workshop put on by the Nottingham YANA Community. The Daf is a large Iranian Kurdish frame drum used in popular and classical music in Iran. The workshop was followed by a performance from Nottingham drumming collective Arnica. On Thursday 19th we held two mini catwalk shows of ‘FaGee Fashion’. Created by Faith Gakanje, the unique brand brings a range of African fashion to the UK.
