…and then, I have nature and art and poetry, and if that is not enough, what is enough?

Vincent van Gogh

When you sign up, you’ll be sent a series of prompts to stimulate your creative thinking. With guidance from Rachel, you’ll take inspiration from natural objects. As a group, we’ll use discussion, drawing and writing to explore your ideas about the natural world. You’ll learn about nature’s positive impact on wellbeing – picking up tips about taking notice of your senses and being mindful in nature.

There are 4 workshops in this series. We encourage you to book all four, however you can choose to attend just one. Each session will have a different focus. You do not need any previous experience of making art.

Why take part?

  • Learn new skills & experiment with drawing and writing
  • Connect with new people
  • Share the experience of creating art as part of a group
  • Go on a creative journey using nature as your inspiration
  • Find out how accessing nature can enhance your wellbeing

How it works

The workshop will take place over Zoom. You will join a small group of other participants. They are interactive sessions where you’ll have the chance to talk to the artist and other participants.

After you’ve signed up, we will send you a link to join the Zoom the meeting. You can join using a computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone. If you haven’t used Zoom before, let us know and we will help you get online.

What you’ll need

You will need a few basic arts materials that we hope you’ll have around your home. Please make sure you have these ready before joining the workshop:

  • A natural object (something collected on a walk like a feather, twig or leaf – or something in the house like a plant, an apple, something from the fridge)
  • plain paper
  • a pencil

If there are specialist materials needed, we will post them to you prior to the workshop.

About the artist

Rachel Howfield Massey is the founder of Other Ways to Walk. She specialises in the benefits of creatively connecting with nature. Her practice draws on her training as an artist and mindfulness instructor, her knowledge of fieldcraft and tracking, and her experience of engaging diverse audiences. Her work is informed by research but not confined to theory – she can often be found investigating the different smells of an oak tree or installing a hammock as an act of protest against the cult of busyness.
