Pysanky is an ancient Ukrainian egg decorating art. Learn how to create wonderful decorated eggs using a combination of wax and dye.
Join this workshop with artist Tory Hayward and learn this ancient folk tradition. You will be guided through the process create and writing symbol-rich designs, before dying your egg in a variety of colours. You will leave with your own unique decorated egg.
All materials will be provided. Please be aware that we will be using candles and hot metal tools to draw molten wax onto chicken’s eggs. We will be using dyes, which can be messy. You may wish to bring an apron.
Suitable for ages 12+. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Disasters Emergency Committee is a group of 15 charities, all experts in humanitarian aid and specialists in different areas of disaster response. DEC charities and their local partners are in Ukraine and in neighbouring countries providing food, water, shelter and medical assistance.
About the artist
Tory Hayward is self-taught printmaker. She has developed a unique style of linocut relief prints, using traditional materials and tools. Tory’s influences included the natural world, Japanese printmaking and the occult. In 2020, her printmaking work was awarded an Arts Council England Developing Your Creative Project (DYCP) award.
This workshop is part of Tory Haywards ‘100 Eggs for Ukraine’ exhibition, supported through City Arts’s RESIDENCE project.
