Working with the Institute of Mental Health, City Arts puts on exhibitions looking at people’s experience of mental health issues.
Each year we run an open exhibition asking artists to submit work on a theme related to mental health. In addition, we programme three solo exhibitions. These allow artists with a body of work to explore a topic in more depth.
We do not charge artists a fee to exhibit their work.
About the exhibition space
Exhibitions take place in the hallway of the Institute of Mental Health, on the University of Nottingham’s Jubilee Campus. The limitations of the space mean we can only accept 2D artwork.
The Institute gets a high number of visitors during exhibitions. They include mental health professionals, academics, students and members of the public. Visitors report that seeing the work leads to a better understanding of mental health and helps challenge stigma surrounding the subject.
About the Institute of Mental Health
The Institute is dedicated to innovative mental health research and education. It makes new discoveries, improves lives and challenges stigma. Art and creativity can support mental health recovery. The Institute is proud of its work to support artists through its partnership with City Arts.
The Institute of Mental Health is a partnership between Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Nottingham.
Who can exhibit
We invite applications from people including, but not limited to:
- Artists with personal experience of mental health issues
- Artists inspired by themes related to mental health
- Professionals working in the field of mental health
For solo exhibitions we can also accept applications from:
- artist collectives
- art projects that have resulted in a body of work
- existing touring exhibitions
Applying to exhibit
For our annual open exhibition, we release a call for submissions in the first few months of the year. The call will specify a theme and ask artists to submit artwork that responds to it. It could be new or existing work. To make sure you don’t miss the opportunity, sign-up to our mailing list or follow us on Facebook.
If you have a body of work that you would like to exhibit, please submit an expression of interest using the form at the end of this page. A member of the City Arts team will get back to you. We programme three exhibition a year. Please be aware that it may be a while before a slot is available.
Selling you work
If you would like, we can promote your work as for sale. Artworks will be labelled with prices and City Arts will manage sales on your behalf. As an administration fee, we take a 10% commission on sales of artworks over £50. Please bear this in mind when setting prices for the work.
If you do not wish to sell your artwork that is fine. You can also show a mix of work that is for sale and not for sale.
