Too often older people are excluded from public life and our City’s major events. This year City Arts’ Carnival Troupe will address that imbalance, bringing the contribution of Nottingham’s elders to the fore.
In one of a number of projects we are working on for our 2014 carnival troupe, care home residents from across Nottingham are providing the inspiration & decoration for a giant bird puppet being built by renowned puppet maker, Tony Mason. In 2012, Tony Mason created the two giant lions that led the Team GB Olympic winners’ parade.
These photos capture Tony’s visits to Abbeyfield’s Millbeck House, Nottinghamshire Hospice and Radford Care Group. Residents attached feathers covered their memories and experiences to a maquette of the final bird. In sessions led by artist Jessica Kemp, care home residents will decorate the feathers for the giant puppet with their photos and stories.
We are running this carnival project as part of the Imagine Programme for Older People. The programme is one of only four nationally to be awarded money from Arts Council England and The Baring Foundation’s Arts and Older People in Care fund. The 3-year project will use the arts to enrich the lives of older residents, better involve them in the wider community and support them to connect with people of all ages.
Make sure you are out to watch the bird take flight in the Nottingham Carnival parade on Sunday 17th August 2014.
