More photos from our carnival projects with older people: these show the work of artist Nathan Bainbridge and Men in Sheds, a project for older men run by AgeUK Notts.
The guys have worked together to design and build two giant snail shaped carnival floats. Nathan has given creative support & advice to the group, whilst they have brought their technical expertise to the construction. The snails, built around shopping trolleys, will be a major part of our troupe for the Nottingham Carnival parade on Sunday 17 August.
Men in Sheds is an interesting project. Based on an Australian initiative, it brings together older men in Nottinghamshire and provides them with a well equipped workshop in which they can work together on practical projects. The men make new friends, put their skills to good use, share their knowledge, learn new skills and generally put the world to rights over a cup of tea.
Di Trinder, Assistant Chief Executive at Age UK Notts, said:
“We’re thrilled to be working with City Arts and Nathan Bainbridge; this project will certainly provide them with a new challenge. Working together with other local community groups on a project for the Nottingham Carnival allows Men in Sheds to benefit the wider community in a unique way”
Artist Nathan Bainbridge has really enjoyed working with the group:
“It has been a great project so far, from getting to know each other by drinking tea and discussing ideas to finally starting to see the project coming to life. At each stage we have had to make changes and the input from different people in the group has been what will make this an interesting carnival float. The spray cans are now coming out and it is great to see some colour starting to bring the snails to life. I look forward to seeing them bringing smiles to people’s faces out on the parade”.
