Nottingham Light Night is a family-friendly festival in Nottingham city centre, run by Nottingham City Council. It features immersive and interactive light installations, performances and activities.
City Arts was commission to produce a community lantern parade for the 2023 festival. The organisation has contributed to Nottingham Light Night since 2008.
Lantern Making
In workshops, Nottingham residents and a range of local community groups crafted beautiful lanterns from willow paper and glue. Professional artists Bryony McCombie-Smith and Holly Farmer led the sessions.
The community groups taking part included:
- Young People from The Greenway Centre, Sneinton
- 92nd Nottingham Scout Group
- Meander Theatre
- And attendees at our public workshops
The Parade
Over 140 community participants lit up Lister Gate, Albert Street, St Peter’s Gate, Bridlesmith Gate and Low Pavement. Our giant parrot puppet and Alison Denholm’s flamingo mobility scooters led the procession. It was soundtrack by the Can Samba Bateria (drum group). Dancers from Inspire Urself Carnival Troupe joined the parade.
Thousands of local people turned out to watch the parade.
