A City Arts Bursary for artists living in Nottingham

RESIDENCE supports artists who have faced barriers in their career relating to class, ethnicity or disability. City Arts is offering three bursaries of £1200 to marginalised artists living in Nottingham, working in any artform.

If successful, you will undertake an artist’s residency with City Arts. This will give you the time to develop your work and share the results with us. It could result in an exhibition, a performance, a sharing or a small publication.

Artist Zoe Milner stands in front of some of her work.

There is an additional £200 for any art materials you may need. You will receive support from the City Arts team. If you need space to work on your project, you can access the City Arts building. As part of the bursary, you will team up with a mentor or creative collaborator. They will support you and help your idea grow. We can find this person together.

This opportunity has been designed with the support of a Community Steering Group. The group is made up of people with a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences. They will be part of the selection process.

Who can apply?

This opportunity is open to:

  • People from Black, South Asian, East Asian and Mixed Ethnic backgrounds, or backgrounds Indigenous to the Global South
  • D/deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people, including those with hidden disabilities and learning disabilities
  • People from working class backgrounds

You might be part of more than one of these groups. You should be aged 18+.

The opportunity is open to artists working in any art form. It could be painting, drawing, music, film, photography, poetry, literature, performance, or something else.

Artists from Black, South Asian, East Asian and Mixed Ethnic backgrounds, or backgrounds Indigenous to the Global South, who are awarded a bursary will be part of New Art Exchange’s Transform Festival. We will work with artists from other backgrounds to find professional networks and opportunities to profile work.

If you are unsure whether this opportunity is right for you, please get in touch. We can talk about it with you. Please email alison@city-arts.org.uk or call 0115 9505251.

What should my proposal be?

We are looking for proposals that do one or more of the following:

  • Increase the artist’s knowledge and experience
  • Showcase the artist’s personal style

Your proposal doesn’t have to be a brand-new idea. If you’ve had an idea for a while, but don’t know how to take it further, we can work with you to overcome the challenges.

You should be able to complete your project within the £1200 budget.

Time Commitment

If successful, your residency will take place between February and June 2024. An individual timetable for each award will be created with you and the City Arts team.

If you are interested in submitting a proposal but have access needs which might make it difficult to undertake the work in the way we have described it, please still make an application. If at the end of the process we offer you the bursary, we will work with you to find practical solutions to any barriers you might encounter. This might include BSL support, Easy Read documents or access to a translator. Your access needs will not be a factor in the decision to make you an offer.

If you need support with the application process, please email alison@city-arts.org.uk or call 0115 9505251.

Critical Dates

We will host an online question and answer session for artists thinking of applying for the bursary.
