Mobility Scooter Costumes
Times and dates will be confirmed once we have 6-8 willing shop-mobility dancers.
We are searching for a fleet of shop-mobility scooter users to perform in the City Arts & Can Samba ‘Flying Free’ Carnival Troupe.
The ‘Flying Free’ creative team will design and build a spectacular costume around your scooter and you will become the centrepiece for this years troupe.

Friday Family Choir

An exciting, high quality, music programme with singing at its core. Experience the joy of being part of a choir!
Musicians Louise Black and Peter Upton will lead you in these fun family workshops; teaching you to read music and introducing you to a repertoire of songs that you can perform and share with others.

Mandinga Masterclass
Saturday 23rd May
10am – 5pm
Mandinga Arts is one of the best Carnival Companies in the UK. They design and create award-winning giant puppets, costumes, masks and floats for carnivals, festivals, community projects and theatre. Influenced by carnival traditions from around the world, in particular Latin America, their elaborate and humorous designs have been seen in some of the UK biggest events including Notting Hill Carnival, the Thames Festival and Bestival.
Join their artistic director, Charles Beauchamp, for a day of creative play. Charles will share some ideas, techniques and materials that have won Mandinga international acclaim.
Get your ideas for the coming carnival season flowing!

Making Masks for the Theatre

In this four-day practical masterclass, performer and expert mask maker Stephen Jon will share some of his twenty years of experience, introducing you to techniques and processes that date back to the fifteenth century and are still in use today.
You will also learn some performance techniques to bring your mask to life.

Early Years Painting Together

Bring your under-5’s to this weekly painting group, led by artist Liza Aspell, and experience the joys of painting together.
Using the provided paint and paper you and your child will have a fantastic time exploring ideas and learn to express yourselves. These creative and collaborative play sessions offer a way of building non-verbal relationships in an informal and supportive environment.
We ask for a small contribution towards refreshments, respectful of circumstance.

Adults Carnival Dance

Get fit, have fun and most importantly, get ready to be part of Nottingham Carnival on 23rd August 2015!
Dancer SaRena Kay will teach you samba moves inspired by Rio Carnival and the traditional choreography of the Orixás (latin american spirits), so you can strut your stuff, in glorious carnival costume, as part of the City Arts & Can Samba ‘Flying Free’ Carnival Troupe.

City Arts’ Young Producers lead an afternoon of free creative workshops.
Learn about and experiment with a variety of different printing techniques including relief printing, rubberstamp & monoprint. Alternatively, use recycled materials to make incredible scenes inspired by nature, your favourite book, or plucked straight from your imagination.

Samba for the over 50’s

In Rio Carnival older women don spectacular Biana costumes and process gently along the route.
We are looking for some intrepid women, aged 50+, to be part of our 2015 carnival programme. Come dance and have fun in sessions led by SaRena Kay. There is no obligation to process, but you can become a Biana at Nottingham Carnival on the 23rd August 2015.

Children’s Carnival Dance

Learn about samba and Afro-Brazilian dance in these fun and playful workshops with dancer SaRena Kay.
Over the course of the sessions you will develop the skills and confidence to step out for Nottingham Carnival on the 23rd August 2015, as part of the City Arts & Can Samba ‘Flying Free’ Carnival Troupe.

Come make some noise with pro-percussionist Ceri Howells, musical director of Can Samba.
In a series of workshops Ceri will teach you all about the rhythms of samba. At Nottingham Carnival, on 23rd August 2015, you can put your new skills to good use as part of the rhythm section for City Arts & Can Samba ‘Flying Free’ Carnival Troupe. As Carnival approaches there will be the option to attend a percussion masterclass, hosted by internationally renowned guest artist JP Courtney.
Under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult.

Love sewing, sparkles and sequins? Join a team that will create colourful costumes and sensational centrepieces for the ‘Flying Free’ Carnival Troupe.
Over the summer, Can Samba’s SaRena Kay will be in residence at City Arts creating over 60 costumes for Nottingham Carnival. Register your interest if you would like to help out and we will send you the dates.
