Anansi and the Lost Sun

Date of event: 27 May 2026 Event start time: 11:00am - Event end time: 1:00pm

Venue Address: Bulwell Riverside Community Room, Bulwell Riverside, Main Street, Nottingham, NG6 8QJ

A performer animatedly operates a handmade puppet with large eyes and patterned clothing, leaning over a suitcase-style stage. Warm orange lighting fills the scene. The performer wears a decorative headpiece featuring an insect-like form, and holds a small winged prop in front of the puppet.

A free puppet show and workshop for ages 6+.

Join us for a lively, funny and imaginative show inspired by traditional West African Anansi stories.

Full of music, storytelling and unforgettable characters, puppets made from everyday materials come to life.

A large, expressive puppet head resembling a lion or wild creature with glowing orange eyes and a shaggy mane made from straw-like fibres is held up by a performer dressed in black.

When darkness falls across the land, the animals must work to bring back the light. But who will succeed? The powerful eagle? The clever monkey? Or Anansi the spider and his friends?

I enjoyed it so much I didn’t want it to end.

Audience feedback

This is a story about teamwork, courage and using your wits.

After the show, stay for a hands-on workshop led by artist Bryony McCombie Smith, with Lauren Nicole Whitter and Raisa Mcclarey Francis of Anansi Theatre Company. Create your own puppet and try bringing it to life. You can take your puppet home and keep the story going.

Anansi and the Lost Sun is presented by Swallow’s Wings Puppetry as part of Nottingham Puppet Festival.
