Two children, one girl and one boy, sit on the edge of a stage with big smiles. The background features a black curtain with colorful wooden marionettes hanging behind them. The children are surrounded by small, handmade puppet creations.

City Arts has been awarded £20,000 by the Garfield Weston Foundation. It will go towards the charity’s core operating costs. The Garfield Weston Foundation provides funding for a wide range of causes, including education, the arts, health, and the environment. It focuses on supporting projects that benefit communities across the UK.

By contributing to the organisation’s core costs, the money will support City Arts work bringing art, culture and creativity into Nottingham’s community venues and outdoor spaces including the city centre. This includes projects like:

  • Carlton Art Week – a bespoke programme of events and exhibitions designed with and for residents of Carlton in Nottinghamshire.
  • Hoopla! – a series of mini-festivals for 0-4 year olds, taking place in public parks in Hyson Green, St Anns, Aspley and Bulwell.
  • Nottingham Puppet Festival – where family friendly shows toured to local libraries and community centres across Nottingham, and giant puppets took over the city centre.
A lively street scene featuring a giant mechanical puppet with multiple heads being carried by performers in a city center. The performers, dressed in black, walk with the towering puppet, which is constructed from wood and metal. Spectators, including families with children, watch from the sidewalks.

Suzannah Bedford, City Arts Director, said:

We are grateful for the Garfield Weston Foundation’s investment in our work. We produce events that meet the needs of our city and its communities, ranging from big public events to tailored targeted workshops. Our work brings new and unexpected art and creativity to under-utilised spaces, transforming where people live and changing how they feel about what is possible.  Support from Garfield Weston is a recognition of the quality of our work and the transformative impact we are able to bring about for Nottingham and our communities.
